What is WebCT?
WebCT (Web Course Tools) was a popular learning management system (LMS) used in the education sector, particularly in higher education institutions, to deliver online courses and manage eLearning content. It was developed in the late 1990s by Murray Goldberg and colleagues at the University of British Columbia in Canada. WebCT provided a platform for educators to create and manage digital learning environments, enabling them to offer online courses, share resources, interact with students, and assess learning outcomes.
WebCT was widely used in the early 2000s, alongside other LMS platforms like Blackboard. Over time, there were various versions and iterations of WebCT. In 2006, WebCT was acquired by Blackboard, another major player in the LMS space. As a result of the acquisition, many institutions that were using WebCT transitioned to other platforms, including Blackboard's own LMS.
Key Features of WebCT
Course Creation and Delivery
WebCT allowed instructors to create online courses by organizing content such as lecture notes, assignments, quizzes, and discussion forums within a structured framework. Students could access this content remotely.
Communication Tools
The platform included tools for communication between instructors and students, as well as among students themselves. Discussion boards, email, and chat features facilitated interaction and collaboration.
Assessment and Evaluation
Instructors could create quizzes, assignments, and exams within WebCT. The system supported various types of assessment methods and allowed instructors to grade and provide feedback online.
Content Management
WebCT provided a way to manage and store course materials, reducing the need for physical resources. This included multimedia elements like videos and presentations.
Gradebook
The platform included a digital gradebook that allowed instructors to track and manage students' grades throughout the course.
Security and Access Control
WebCT allowed institutions to control access to courses and materials. This was particularly important for maintaining the privacy and security of educational content.
User Management
Instructors could enroll students in courses and manage user accounts. Students could log in to access their courses and materials.
Customization
Institutions and instructors could customize the look and feel of their WebCT environment, making it more aligned with their branding and preferences.
